The event gave residents a safer and more responsible alternative to keeping or using illegal fireworks. It also created an opportunity for students and families to learn about wildfire risk and community safety.
Through youth outreach, public education, and collaboration with local fire-safety leaders, the event reinforced a simple message: prevention begins before the spark.
View EventsSparkWhyz’s citywide fireworks turn-in effort brought together students, families, firefighters, city leaders, and community supporters.
The event showed that prevention can be positive, practical, and community-driven.
Rather than waiting for fireworks to cause a fire, injury, or emergency, residents were encouraged to make a safer choice before something happened.
The event also helped SparkWhyz share its youth-led message with more families across Laguna Beach.
SparkWhyz is built on the belief that young people can lead meaningful change when they are trusted, supported, and given a clear purpose.
SparkWhyz students speak with families, collect pledges, organize events, create educational materials, and share prevention messages with their peers.
Their work shows other young people that making a safe choice is something to be proud of, not something to hide.
When students lead, the message can feel more relatable, honest, and powerful to other students.
Students show their peers that making a safe choice is strong, responsible, and worth recognizing.
Young people organize projects, speak at events, collect pledges, and share prevention messages.
Students may listen differently when an important message comes from someone their own age.
SparkWhyz began after a wildfire was started in Laguna Beach by a middle-school-aged boy using illegal fireworks.
Instead of asking only who should be blamed, our family asked a different question: what if someone had reached that student before he made the decision?
That question became the foundation of SparkWhyz.
The mission is to reach young people earlier, give them safer choices, and help them understand that one impulsive action can affect an entire community.
